Brenan literacy in 1911
Of the Brenans whose literacy was recorded, 88% could both read and write, 2.2% could read but not write, and 9.8% could do neither. Women came out slightly ahead, 92.3% reading and writing against 82.5% of men. Bear in mind these figures include young children; the census itself only counted people aged nine and over when calculating illiteracy, on the grounds that it was unfair to label a child illiterate before they'd had a chance to learn.

Among the rest, the most common occupations were general labourer (5.4%), domestic servant (4.3%), farmer (4.3%) and medical / nursing (4.3%). Grouped by sector, professional accounted for 13% of all Brenans, followed by agriculture, general labourers and domestic service.

Brenans were predominantly Roman Catholic (84.8%). The remainder were mostly Anglican (15.2%).
