The average Brereton in 1911 was 29.4 years old, 26.9 for men and 31.6 for women; almost exactly in line with the national averages of 29.6 for men and 30.5 for women. That low figure reflects just how many children there were in Edwardian Ireland, along with high infant mortality and the limits of public health at the time. For comparison, average life expectancy in Ireland today is around 83.
Brereton literacy in 1911
Of the Breretons whose literacy was recorded, 82.7% could both read and write, 2.5% could read but not write, and 14.8% could do neither. Women came out slightly ahead, 85.5% reading and writing against 79.1% of men. Bear in mind these figures include young children; the census itself only counted people aged nine and over when calculating illiteracy, on the grounds that it was unfair to label a child illiterate before they'd had a chance to learn.

The most common male names were John (25), William, James, Thomas and Patrick. For women it was Mary (40), followed by Ellen, Elizabeth, Margaret and Annie.

Among the rest, the most common occupations were farmer (10.2%), no occupation / dependent (3.4%), domestic servant (2.6%) and general labourer (1.8%). Grouped by sector, agriculture accounted for 12.2% of all Breretons, followed by domestic service, no occupation / dependent and textiles & clothing.

Breretons were predominantly Roman Catholic (72.9%). The remainder were mostly Anglican (21.4%), Moravian (2.1%), Congregationalist (0.5%) and Protestant (0.5%).
