The 1911 Census recorded 1,518 people named Breslin in Ireland, about 0.035% of everyone living in the country at the time and the 573rd most common surname overall. The name was split fairly evenly between men and women: 758 men and 759 women. (A small number, 1, had no sex recorded.)
Counties with Breslin in Ireland
The Breslins were heavily concentrated in Donegal, home to 58.9% of them (894 people). Next came Dublin (115), Derry (86), Tyrone (67) and Wexford (65).

The average Breslin in 1911 was 30.2 years old, 30.0 for men and 30.4 for women; almost exactly in line with the national averages of 29.6 for men and 30.5 for women. That low figure reflects just how many children there were in Edwardian Ireland, along with high infant mortality and the limits of public health at the time. For comparison, average life expectancy in Ireland today is around 83.
Breslin literacy in 1911
Of the Breslins whose literacy was recorded, 70% could both read and write, 4% could read but not write, and 26% could do neither. Men came out slightly ahead, 71.5% reading and writing against 68.5% of women. Bear in mind these figures include young children; the census itself only counted people aged nine and over when calculating illiteracy, on the grounds that it was unfair to label a child illiterate before they'd had a chance to learn.

The most common male names were John (115), James, Patrick, Edward and William. For women it was Mary (144), followed by Bridget, Annie, Ellen and Catherine.

The most common occupation among Breslins was farmer, 20.9% of them (317 people). Next came scholar / student (20.4%), farm labourer (3.5%), general labourer (2.6%) and shopkeeper / shop assistant / dealer (2.4%). Grouped by sector, agriculture accounted for 25% of all Breslins, followed by textiles & clothing, domestic service and retail & commerce.
What religion is Breslin?
Breslins were overwhelmingly Roman Catholic, 98.9% of them. The remainder were mostly Presbyterian (0.3%) and Anglican (0.2%).
