The 1911 Census recorded 85 people named Brine in Ireland; roughly one in every 52,000 people carried the name. The name was split fairly evenly between men and women: 42 men and 43 women.

Wexford had the largest share of Brines, 22.4% (19 people). Next came Carlow (15), Westmeath (13), Tipperary (12) and Dublin (10).

The average Brine in 1911 was 28.0 years old, 29.3 for men and 26.8 for women; a touch younger than the national averages of 29.6 for men and 30.5 for women. That low figure reflects just how many children there were in Edwardian Ireland, along with high infant mortality and the limits of public health at the time. For comparison, average life expectancy in Ireland today is around 83.
Brine literacy in 1911
Of the Brines whose literacy was recorded, 64.5% could both read and write, 13.2% could read but not write, and 22.4% could do neither. Women came out slightly ahead, 67.5% reading and writing against 61.1% of men. Bear in mind these figures include young children; the census itself only counted people aged nine and over when calculating illiteracy, on the grounds that it was unfair to label a child illiterate before they'd had a chance to learn.
Brine common first names
The most common male names were James (8), John, Thomas, William and Michael. For women it was Mary (10), followed by Bridget, Annie, Anne and Catherine.
Brine occupations in 1911
The most common entry on a Brine's census form was "Scholar"; 21.2% (18) were children at school. Among the rest, the most common occupations were general labourer (9.4%), farm labourer (7.1%), domestic servant (4.7%) and farmer (4.7%). Grouped by sector, agriculture accounted for 14.1% of all Brines, followed by general labourers, domestic service and textiles & clothing.
What religion is Brine?
Brines were overwhelmingly Roman Catholic, 95.3% of them. The remainder were mostly Anglican (2.4%).
