Men came out slightly ahead, 96.6% reading and writing against 91.7% of women. Bear in mind these figures include young children; the census itself only counted people aged nine and over when calculating illiteracy, on the grounds that it was unfair to label a child illiterate before they'd had a chance to learn.

Among the rest, the most common occupations were shopkeeper / shop assistant / dealer (9.3%), textile worker (5.6%), farmer (3.7%) and laundress (3.7%). Grouped by sector, retail & commerce accounted for 11.1% of all Brittains, followed by textiles & clothing, agriculture and metal & engineering.
What religion is Brittain?
The largest religious group among Brittains was Anglican, at 38.9%. The remainder were mostly Roman Catholic (24.1%), Presbyterian (18.5%) and Methodist (14.8%).
