Of the Broes whose literacy was recorded, 81.3% could both read and write, 4.4% could read but not write, and 14.3% could do neither. The figures were much the same for men and women. Bear in mind these figures include young children; the census itself only counted people aged nine and over when calculating illiteracy, on the grounds that it was unfair to label a child illiterate before they'd had a chance to learn.

Among the rest, the most common occupations were farmer (7.4%), general labourer (6%), domestic servant (3.7%) and farm labourer (1.8%). Grouped by sector, agriculture accounted for 10.6% of all Broes, followed by general labourers, domestic service and transport.
