Brown in 1911 Ireland
The 1911 Census recorded 11,563 people named Brown in Ireland, about 0.264% of everyone living in the country at the time and the 43rd most common surname overall. The name was split fairly evenly between men and women: 5,605 men and 5,936 women. (A small number, 22, had no sex recorded.)
Counties with Brown in Ireland
Antrim had the largest share of Browns, 24.1% (2,782 people). Next came Down (2,278), Dublin (1,149), Derry (940) and Tyrone (561).
Brown average age in 1911
The average Brown in 1911 was 29.5 years old, 28.9 for men and 30.1 for women; almost exactly in line with the national averages of 29.6 for men and 30.5 for women. That low figure reflects just how many children there were in Edwardian Ireland, along with high infant mortality and the limits of public health at the time. For comparison, average life expectancy in Ireland today is around 83.
Brown literacy in 1911
Of the Browns whose literacy was recorded, 77.5% could both read and write, 4.6% could read but not write, and 17.9% could do neither. The figures were much the same for men and women. Bear in mind these figures include young children; the census itself only counted people aged nine and over when calculating illiteracy, on the grounds that it was unfair to label a child illiterate before they'd had a chance to learn.
Brown common first names
The most common male names were John (663), James, William, Thomas and Robert. For women it was Mary (604), followed by Margaret, Elizabeth, Sarah and Annie.
Brown occupations in 1911
The most common entry on a Brown's census form was "Scholar"; 19% (2,194) were children at school. Among the rest, the most common occupations were farmer (9.1%), textile worker (4.9%), general labourer (4.5%) and farm labourer (3.8%). Grouped by sector, agriculture accounted for 13.6% of all Browns, followed by textiles & clothing, domestic service and general labourers.
What religion is Brown?
The largest religious group among Browns was Roman Catholic, at 33.8%. The remainder were mostly Presbyterian (32.5%), Anglican (27.5%), Methodist (2.9%) and Congregationalist (0.7%).
