The 1911 Census recorded 350 people named Bruen in Ireland; roughly one in every 13,000 people carried the name. The name was split fairly evenly between men and women: 172 men and 178 women.

That low figure reflects just how many children there were in Edwardian Ireland, along with high infant mortality and the limits of public health at the time. For comparison, average life expectancy in Ireland today is around 83.
Bruen literacy in 1911
Of the Bruens whose literacy was recorded, 82.8% could both read and write, 2.1% could read but not write, and 15.1% could do neither. The figures were much the same for men and women. Bear in mind these figures include young children; the census itself only counted people aged nine and over when calculating illiteracy, on the grounds that it was unfair to label a child illiterate before they'd had a chance to learn.

The most common male names were John (22), Michael, Patrick, James and Thomas; the same five names that topped the list nationally. For women it was Mary (18), followed by Bridget, Catherine, Margaret and Anne.

The most common occupation among Bruens was farmer, 21.1% of them (74 people). Next came scholar / student (19.1%), general labourer (2.6%), farm labourer (2.3%) and retired / pensioner (2%). Grouped by sector, agriculture accounted for 23.4% of all Bruens, followed by general labourers, professional and retired & pensioners.

Bruens were overwhelmingly Roman Catholic, 95.4% of them. The remainder were mostly Anglican (2%).
