That low figure reflects just how many children there were in Edwardian Ireland, along with high infant mortality and the limits of public health at the time. For comparison, average life expectancy in Ireland today is around 83.

Of the Bulmans whose literacy was recorded, 82.2% could both read and write, 2.7% could read but not write, and 15.1% could do neither. Men came out slightly ahead, 85.7% reading and writing against 78.9% of women. Bear in mind these figures include young children; the census itself only counted people aged nine and over when calculating illiteracy, on the grounds that it was unfair to label a child illiterate before they'd had a chance to learn.

The most common male names were William (6), Patrick, Thomas, Anthony and Con. For women it was Mary (7), followed by Bridget, Johannah, Margaret and Anne.

The most common entry on a Bulman's census form was "Scholar"; 25.6% (21) were children at school. Among the rest, the most common occupations were farmer (13.4%), farm labourer (6.1%), general labourer (6.1%) and no occupation / dependent (3.7%). Grouped by sector, agriculture accounted for 19.5% of all Bulmans, followed by general labourers, no occupation / dependent and textiles & clothing.
