The 1911 Census recorded 613 people named Bunting in Ireland; roughly one in every 7,200 people carried the name. The name was split fairly evenly between men and women: 298 men and 315 women.
Counties with Bunting in Ireland
The Buntings were heavily concentrated in Antrim, home to 56.3% of them (345 people). Next came Down (141), Armagh (96), Dublin (12) and Tyrone (6).

The average Bunting in 1911 was 26.5 years old, 25.3 for men and 27.7 for women; noticeably younger than the national averages of 29.6 for men and 30.5 for women. That low figure reflects just how many children there were in Edwardian Ireland, along with high infant mortality and the limits of public health at the time. For comparison, average life expectancy in Ireland today is around 83.
Bunting literacy in 1911
Of the Buntings whose literacy was recorded, 80.6% could both read and write, 5.7% could read but not write, and 13.7% could do neither. The figures were much the same for men and women. Bear in mind these figures include young children; the census itself only counted people aged nine and over when calculating illiteracy, on the grounds that it was unfair to label a child illiterate before they'd had a chance to learn.
Bunting common first names
The most common male names were William (30), John, James, Thomas and Robert. For women it was Mary (27), followed by Elizabeth, Sarah, Jane and Annie.
Bunting occupations in 1911
The most common entry on a Bunting's census form was "Scholar"; 25.4% (156) were children at school. Among the rest, the most common occupations were textile worker (10.4%), farmer (3.4%), general labourer (3.3%) and metal worker / engineer (3.3%). Grouped by sector, textiles & clothing accounted for 13.2% of all Buntings, followed by agriculture, domestic service and metal & engineering.
What religion is Bunting?
Most Buntings, 57.3%, were Anglican. The remainder were mostly Presbyterian (15.8%), Roman Catholic (12.9%), Methodist (5.9%) and Congregationalist (1.3%).
