Women came out slightly ahead, 84% reading and writing against 71.4% of men. Bear in mind these figures include young children; the census itself only counted people aged nine and over when calculating illiteracy, on the grounds that it was unfair to label a child illiterate before they'd had a chance to learn.

The most common male names were James (6), John, Michael, Patrick and Thomas; the same five names that topped the list nationally. For women it was Catherine (6), followed by Mary, Johanna, Biddy and Bridget.

The most common entry on a Burkett's census form was "Scholar"; 15.8% (9) were children at school. Among the rest, the most common occupations were farmer (14%), farm labourer (10.5%), general labourer (7%) and sailor / dock worker (3.5%). Grouped by sector, agriculture accounted for 24.6% of all Burketts, followed by general labourers, retail & commerce and transport.
What religion is Burkett?
Burketts were predominantly Roman Catholic (78.9%). The remainder were mostly Anglican (21.1%).
