Men came out slightly ahead, 72.7% reading and writing against 69% of women. Bear in mind these figures include young children; the census itself only counted people aged nine and over when calculating illiteracy, on the grounds that it was unfair to label a child illiterate before they'd had a chance to learn.

The most common male names were William (5), James, Alexander, George and John Henry. For women it was Mary (4), followed by Amelia, Annie, Agnes and Alice Loussa.

The most common entry on a Bush's census form was "Scholar"; 19% (12) were children at school. Among the rest, the most common occupations were textile worker (11.1%), metal worker / engineer (7.9%), general labourer (4.8%) and domestic servant (3.2%). Grouped by sector, textiles & clothing accounted for 14.3% of all Bushes, followed by metal & engineering, domestic service and general labourers.
What religion is Bush?
Most Bushes, 55.6%, were Anglican. The remainder were mostly Roman Catholic (23.8%), Methodist (14.3%) and Presbyterian (6.3%).
