The 1911 Census recorded 243 people named Bustard in Ireland; roughly one in every 18,000 people carried the name. The name was split fairly evenly between men and women: 116 men and 127 women.

Donegal was Bustard country: 46.9% of them (114 people) lived there in 1911. Next came Antrim (55), Tyrone (28), Down (16) and Fermanagh (14).

The average Bustard in 1911 was 32.0 years old, 35.1 for men and 29.3 for women; slightly older than the national averages of 29.6 for men and 30.5 for women. That low figure reflects just how many children there were in Edwardian Ireland, along with high infant mortality and the limits of public health at the time. For comparison, average life expectancy in Ireland today is around 83.
Bustard literacy in 1911
Of the Bustards whose literacy was recorded, 82.3% could both read and write, 3% could read but not write, and 14.8% could do neither. The figures were much the same for men and women. Bear in mind these figures include young children; the census itself only counted people aged nine and over when calculating illiteracy, on the grounds that it was unfair to label a child illiterate before they'd had a chance to learn.

The most common male names were John (12), William, Thomas, Andrew and George. For women it was Elizabeth (7), followed by Annie, Catherine, Margaret and Lizzie.

Bustards were predominantly Anglican (84.4%). The remainder were mostly Methodist (14.8%) and Roman Catholic (0.4%).
