Women came out slightly ahead, 94.1% reading and writing against 76.1% of men. Bear in mind these figures include young children; the census itself only counted people aged nine and over when calculating illiteracy, on the grounds that it was unfair to label a child illiterate before they'd had a chance to learn.

The most common entry on a Butcher's census form was "Scholar"; 14.8% (13) were children at school. Among the rest, the most common occupations were farm labourer (9.1%), farmer (5.7%), other maker / factory worker (5.7%) and blacksmith / smith (2.3%). Grouped by sector, agriculture accounted for 14.8% of all Butchers, followed by transport, manufacturing & trades and domestic service.

Butchers were overwhelmingly Roman Catholic, 90.9% of them. The remainder were mostly Anglican (6.8%).
