Buttler in 1911 Ireland
The 1911 Census recorded 322 people named Buttler in Ireland; roughly one in every 14,000 people carried the name. The name was split fairly evenly between men and women: 160 men and 162 women.
Counties with Buttler in Ireland
Mayo had the largest share of Buttlers, 19.6% (63 people). Next came Dublin (39), Kilkenny (36), Tipperary (29) and Wexford (26).

The average Buttler in 1911 was 30.3 years old, 27.7 for men and 32.9 for women; almost exactly in line with the national averages of 29.6 for men and 30.5 for women. That low figure reflects just how many children there were in Edwardian Ireland, along with high infant mortality and the limits of public health at the time. For comparison, average life expectancy in Ireland today is around 83.
Buttler literacy in 1911
Of the Buttlers whose literacy was recorded, 64.8% could both read and write, 3.5% could read but not write, and 31.8% could do neither. Women came out slightly ahead, 65.8% reading and writing against 63.7% of men. Bear in mind these figures include young children; the census itself only counted people aged nine and over when calculating illiteracy, on the grounds that it was unfair to label a child illiterate before they'd had a chance to learn.
Buttler common first names
The most common male names were John (28), Thomas, James, Patrick and Michael; the same five names that topped the list nationally. For women it was Mary (33), followed by Bridget, Annie, Catherine and Ellen.
Buttler occupations in 1911
The most common entry on a Buttler's census form was "Scholar"; 17.4% (56) were children at school. Among the rest, the most common occupations were farmer (13.7%), farm labourer (8.1%), domestic servant (7.1%) and general labourer (5%). Grouped by sector, agriculture accounted for 22% of all Buttlers, followed by domestic service, general labourers and retail & commerce.
What religion is Buttler?
Buttlers were overwhelmingly Roman Catholic, 93.5% of them. The remainder were mostly Anglican (5.9%) and Presbyterian (0.6%).
