C in 1911 Ireland
The 1911 Census recorded 9,439 people named C in Ireland, about 0.215% of everyone living in the country at the time and the 55th most common surname overall. There were noticeably more men than women recorded: 5,700 men to 3,295 women. (A small number, 444, had no sex recorded.)
Counties with C in Ireland
Dublin had the largest share of Cs, 18.7% (1,765 people). Next came Cork (1,315), Antrim (744), Kildare (494) and Galway (490).
C average age in 1911
The average C in 1911 was 38.9 years old, 37.7 for men and 42.7 for women; noticeably older than the national averages of 29.6 for men and 30.5 for women. That low figure reflects just how many children there were in Edwardian Ireland, along with high infant mortality and the limits of public health at the time. For comparison, average life expectancy in Ireland today is around 83.
C literacy in 1911
Of the Cs whose literacy was recorded, 74% could both read and write, 4.9% could read but not write, and 21.1% could do neither. Men came out slightly ahead, 79.6% reading and writing against 60.1% of women. Bear in mind these figures include young children; the census itself only counted people aged nine and over when calculating illiteracy, on the grounds that it was unfair to label a child illiterate before they'd had a chance to learn.
C common first names
The most common male names were J (1,435), P, M, W and T. For women it was M (1,107), followed by E, A, B and C.
C occupations in 1911
The most common occupation among Cs was general labourer, 20.3% of them (1,914 people). Next came farmer (11%), domestic servant (9.4%), scholar / student (6.8%) and farm labourer (3.2%). Grouped by sector, general labourers accounted for 20.3% of all Cs, followed by agriculture, domestic service and textiles & clothing.
What religion is C?
Cs were predominantly Roman Catholic (72.4%). The remainder were mostly Anglican (17.2%), Presbyterian (4.8%), Methodist (0.9%) and Baptist (0.1%).
