Women came out slightly ahead, 85.3% reading and writing against 70.8% of men. Bear in mind these figures include young children; the census itself only counted people aged nine and over when calculating illiteracy, on the grounds that it was unfair to label a child illiterate before they'd had a chance to learn.

The most common entry on a Calder's census form was "Scholar"; 13.3% (8) were children at school. Among the rest, the most common occupations were textile worker (6.7%), sailor / dock worker (5%), blacksmith / smith (3.3%) and carpenter / joiner (3.3%). Grouped by sector, textiles & clothing accounted for 10% of all Calders, followed by transport, agriculture and building & construction.
What religion is Calder?
Most Calders, 60%, were Anglican. The remainder were mostly Presbyterian (40%).
