Men came out slightly ahead, 74.4% reading and writing against 71.7% of women. Bear in mind these figures include young children; the census itself only counted people aged nine and over when calculating illiteracy, on the grounds that it was unfair to label a child illiterate before they'd had a chance to learn.

Among the rest, the most common occupations were farmer (10.4%), general labourer (9.4%), domestic servant (8.3%) and farm labourer (6.2%). Grouped by sector, agriculture accounted for 16.7% of all Callahans, followed by domestic service, general labourers and retired & pensioners.
