Men came out slightly ahead, 84.7% reading and writing against 79.4% of women. Bear in mind these figures include young children; the census itself only counted people aged nine and over when calculating illiteracy, on the grounds that it was unfair to label a child illiterate before they'd had a chance to learn.

Among the rest, the most common occupations were farmer (13.5%), farm labourer (9.6%), domestic servant (5.2%) and general labourer (3.9%). Grouped by sector, agriculture accounted for 23.6% of all Calnans, followed by domestic service, general labourers and retail & commerce.
