The 1911 Census recorded 14,245 people named Campbell in Ireland, about 0.325% of everyone living in the country at the time and the 23rd most common surname overall. The name was split fairly evenly between men and women: 6,968 men and 7,259 women. (A small number, 18, had no sex recorded.)

Antrim was Campbell country: 26.6% of them (3,784 people) lived there in 1911. Next came Down (2,261), Tyrone (1,286), Derry (1,240) and Donegal (1,129).
Campbell average age in 1911
The average Campbell in 1911 was 29.6 years old, 28.7 for men and 30.4 for women; almost exactly in line with the national averages of 29.6 for men and 30.5 for women. That low figure reflects just how many children there were in Edwardian Ireland, along with high infant mortality and the limits of public health at the time. For comparison, average life expectancy in Ireland today is around 83.
Campbell literacy in 1911
Of the Campbells whose literacy was recorded, 76.8% could both read and write, 4.7% could read but not write, and 18.4% could do neither. The figures were much the same for men and women. Bear in mind these figures include young children; the census itself only counted people aged nine and over when calculating illiteracy, on the grounds that it was unfair to label a child illiterate before they'd had a chance to learn.

The most common male names were John (859), James, William, Thomas and Patrick. For women it was Mary (794), followed by Margaret, Elizabeth, Annie and Sarah.
Campbell occupations in 1911
The most common entry on a Campbell's census form was "Scholar"; 20% (2,847) were children at school. Among the rest, the most common occupations were farmer (12%), textile worker (4.7%), general labourer (3.7%) and farm labourer (3.2%). Grouped by sector, agriculture accounted for 15.8% of all Campbells, followed by textiles & clothing, general labourers and domestic service.
What religion is Campbell?
The largest religious group among Campbells was Roman Catholic, at 47.5%. The remainder were mostly Presbyterian (27.8%), Anglican (18.5%), Methodist (2.6%) and Baptist (0.4%).
