Bear in mind these figures include young children; the census itself only counted people aged nine and over when calculating illiteracy, on the grounds that it was unfair to label a child illiterate before they'd had a chance to learn.

Grouped by sector, agriculture accounted for 18.9% of all Canavans, followed by general labourers, textiles & clothing and domestic service.

Canavans were overwhelmingly Roman Catholic, 96.8% of them. The remainder were mostly Presbyterian (0.9%), Anglican (0.6%), Methodist (0.6%) and Baptist (0.2%).
