The 1911 Census recorded 50 people named Cane in Ireland; roughly one in every 88,000 people carried the name. The name was split fairly evenly between men and women: 27 men and 23 women.

The Canes were heavily concentrated in Dublin, home to 50% of them (25 people). Next came Clare (4), Mayo (4), Wexford (3) and Waterford (2).

The average Cane in 1911 was 32.8 years old, 28.8 for men and 37.5 for women; slightly older than the national averages of 29.6 for men and 30.5 for women. That low figure reflects just how many children there were in Edwardian Ireland, along with high infant mortality and the limits of public health at the time. For comparison, average life expectancy in Ireland today is around 83.
Cane literacy in 1911
Of the Canes whose literacy was recorded, 75.6% could both read and write, 2.2% could read but not write, and 22.2% could do neither. Men came out slightly ahead, 79.2% reading and writing against 71.4% of women. Bear in mind these figures include young children; the census itself only counted people aged nine and over when calculating illiteracy, on the grounds that it was unfair to label a child illiterate before they'd had a chance to learn.
Cane common first names
The most common male names were James (4), Patrick, John, Christopher and Thomas. For women it was Mary (5), followed by Ellen, Kate, Sarah and Anne.
Cane occupations in 1911
The most common occupation among Canes was farm labourer, 12% of them (6 people). Next came scholar / student (10%), domestic servant (8%), general labourer (6%) and porter / messenger (6%). Grouped by sector, agriculture accounted for 12% of all Canes, followed by domestic service, transport and general labourers.
What religion is Cane?
Canes were predominantly Roman Catholic (78%). The remainder were mostly Anglican (18%) and Methodist (2%).
