Bear in mind these figures include young children; the census itself only counted people aged nine and over when calculating illiteracy, on the grounds that it was unfair to label a child illiterate before they'd had a chance to learn.

Among the rest, the most common occupations were textile worker (12.3%), farmer (6.2%), domestic servant (3.1%) and farm labourer (3.1%). Grouped by sector, textiles & clothing accounted for 13.8% of all Cannavans, followed by agriculture, domestic service and retail & commerce.

Cannavans were predominantly Roman Catholic (87.7%). The remainder were mostly Presbyterian (9.2%) and Unitarian (1.5%).
