Bear in mind these figures include young children; the census itself only counted people aged nine and over when calculating illiteracy, on the grounds that it was unfair to label a child illiterate before they'd had a chance to learn.

Among the rest, the most common occupations were farmer (14.6%), general labourer (3.8%), farm labourer (3.5%) and domestic servant (2.5%). Grouped by sector, agriculture accounted for 18.2% of all Cannings, followed by domestic service, textiles & clothing and general labourers.

Cannings were predominantly Roman Catholic (76.2%). The remainder were mostly Presbyterian (11.1%), Anglican (10.7%), Congregationalist (0.4%) and Plymouth Brethren (0.4%).
