The 1911 Census recorded 1,880 people named Cannon in Ireland, about 0.043% of everyone living in the country at the time and the 467th most common surname overall. The name was split fairly evenly between men and women: 942 men and 936 women. (A small number, 2, had no sex recorded.)

Donegal was Cannon country: 42.7% of them (802 people) lived there in 1911. Next came Mayo (287), Dublin (271), Galway (187) and Leitrim (54).

The average Cannon in 1911 was 31.5 years old, 30.9 for men and 32.0 for women; slightly older than the national averages of 29.6 for men and 30.5 for women. That low figure reflects just how many children there were in Edwardian Ireland, along with high infant mortality and the limits of public health at the time. For comparison, average life expectancy in Ireland today is around 83.
Cannon literacy in 1911
Of the Cannons whose literacy was recorded, 68% could both read and write, 4.7% could read but not write, and 27.3% could do neither. The figures were much the same for men and women. Bear in mind these figures include young children; the census itself only counted people aged nine and over when calculating illiteracy, on the grounds that it was unfair to label a child illiterate before they'd had a chance to learn.

The most common male names were John (139), Patrick, James, Michael and Thomas; the same five names that topped the list nationally. For women it was Mary (160), followed by Bridget, Annie, Anne and Margaret.

The most common occupation among Cannons was farmer, 22.1% of them (415 people). Next came scholar / student (20.5%), farm labourer (3.2%), general labourer (3%) and domestic servant (2.4%). Grouped by sector, agriculture accounted for 25.6% of all Cannons, followed by textiles & clothing, domestic service and general labourers.
What religion is Cannon?
Cannons were overwhelmingly Roman Catholic, 97.6% of them. The remainder were mostly Anglican (1.5%), Presbyterian (0.5%), Methodist (0.1%) and No Religion (0.1%).
