Carry in 1911 Ireland
The 1911 Census recorded 308 people named Carry in Ireland; roughly one in every 14,000 people carried the name. The name was split fairly evenly between men and women: 148 men and 160 women.

Meath was Carry country: 35.7% of them (110 people) lived there in 1911. Next came Offaly (49), Louth (30), Tipperary (23) and Dublin (18).

The average Carry in 1911 was 30.5 years old, 30.3 for men and 30.7 for women; almost exactly in line with the national averages of 29.6 for men and 30.5 for women. That low figure reflects just how many children there were in Edwardian Ireland, along with high infant mortality and the limits of public health at the time. For comparison, average life expectancy in Ireland today is around 83.
Carry literacy in 1911
Of the Carrys whose literacy was recorded, 79.7% could both read and write, 3.7% could read but not write, and 16.7% could do neither. Women came out slightly ahead, 80.9% reading and writing against 78.3% of men. Bear in mind these figures include young children; the census itself only counted people aged nine and over when calculating illiteracy, on the grounds that it was unfair to label a child illiterate before they'd had a chance to learn.
Carry common first names
The most common male names were John (18), Patrick, James, Thomas and William. For women it was Mary (22), followed by Kate, Annie, Margaret and Bridget.
Carry occupations in 1911
The most common entry on a Carry's census form was "Scholar"; 19.5% (60) were children at school. Among the rest, the most common occupations were farmer (12.3%), farm labourer (7.1%), general labourer (6.2%) and domestic servant (5.8%). Grouped by sector, agriculture accounted for 21.1% of all Carrys, followed by domestic service, general labourers and retail & commerce.
What religion is Carry?
Carrys were predominantly Roman Catholic (88.3%). The remainder were mostly Anglican (8.4%), Presbyterian (2.3%) and Plymouth Brethren (0.6%).
