The 1911 Census recorded 1,009 people named Carthy in Ireland, about 0.023% of everyone living in the country at the time and the 780th most common surname overall. The name was split fairly evenly between men and women: 535 men and 473 women. (A small number, 1, had no sex recorded.)
Counties with Carthy in Ireland
Dublin had the largest share of Carthys, 21.3% (215 people). Next came Wexford (168), Wicklow (92), Galway (64) and Carlow (48).
Carthy average age in 1911
The average Carthy in 1911 was 29.0 years old, 29.1 for men and 28.9 for women; almost exactly in line with the national averages of 29.6 for men and 30.5 for women. That low figure reflects just how many children there were in Edwardian Ireland, along with high infant mortality and the limits of public health at the time. For comparison, average life expectancy in Ireland today is around 83.
Carthy literacy in 1911
Of the Carthys whose literacy was recorded, 70% could both read and write, 7% could read but not write, and 22.9% could do neither. Women came out slightly ahead, 72.7% reading and writing against 67.6% of men. Bear in mind these figures include young children; the census itself only counted people aged nine and over when calculating illiteracy, on the grounds that it was unfair to label a child illiterate before they'd had a chance to learn.
Carthy common first names
The most common male names were John (73), Patrick, James, Thomas and Michael; the same five names that topped the list nationally. For women it was Mary (93), followed by Bridget, Margaret, Catherine and Elizabeth.
Carthy occupations in 1911
The most common entry on a Carthy's census form was "Scholar"; 20.5% (207) were children at school. Among the rest, the most common occupations were farmer (13.9%), farm labourer (6.7%), general labourer (6%) and domestic servant (2.9%). Grouped by sector, agriculture accounted for 21.5% of all Carthys, followed by general labourers, domestic service and transport.
What religion is Carthy?
Carthys were overwhelmingly Roman Catholic, 99.3% of them. The remainder were mostly Anglican (0.4%).
