Roscommon had the largest share of Cartys, 18% (410 people). Next came Wexford (408), Sligo (233), Galway (207) and Leitrim (117).

Among the rest, the most common occupations were farmer (19.6%), farm labourer (5%), general labourer (4.1%) and domestic servant (2.2%). Grouped by sector, agriculture accounted for 25.1% of all Cartys, followed by general labourers, domestic service and textiles & clothing.

Cartys were overwhelmingly Roman Catholic, 96.8% of them. The remainder were mostly Anglican (1.4%) and Methodist (0.5%).
