The 1911 Census recorded 406 people named Caughey in Ireland; roughly one in every 11,000 people carried the name. There were noticeably more women than men recorded: 229 women to 176 men. (A small number, 1, had no sex recorded.)
Counties with Caughey in Ireland
The Caugheys were heavily concentrated in Down, home to 70% of them (284 people). Next came Antrim (89), Armagh (24) and Fermanagh (9).
Caughey average age in 1911
The average Caughey in 1911 was 28.2 years old, 27.2 for men and 28.9 for women; a touch younger than the national averages of 29.6 for men and 30.5 for women. That low figure reflects just how many children there were in Edwardian Ireland, along with high infant mortality and the limits of public health at the time. For comparison, average life expectancy in Ireland today is around 83.
Caughey literacy in 1911
Of the Caugheys whose literacy was recorded, 82.7% could both read and write, 3.3% could read but not write, and 14.1% could do neither. Women came out slightly ahead, 84.9% reading and writing against 79.8% of men. Bear in mind these figures include young children; the census itself only counted people aged nine and over when calculating illiteracy, on the grounds that it was unfair to label a child illiterate before they'd had a chance to learn.
Caughey common first names
The most common male names were John (23), William, James, Samuel and Robert. For women it was Mary (19), followed by Jane, Elizabeth, Sarah and Annie.
Caughey occupations in 1911
The most common entry on a Caughey's census form was "Scholar"; 24.4% (99) were children at school. Among the rest, the most common occupations were farmer (11.1%), textile worker (7.4%), general labourer (2.7%) and seamstress (2.7%). Grouped by sector, agriculture accounted for 12.6% of all Caugheys, followed by textiles & clothing, domestic service and general labourers.
What religion is Caughey?
Caugheys were predominantly Presbyterian (75.4%). The remainder were mostly Anglican (12.3%), Roman Catholic (7.6%), Methodist (3.2%) and Baptist (0.5%).
