Caughlin literacy in 1911
Of the Caughlins whose literacy was recorded, 73.5% could both read and write, 2% could read but not write, and 24.5% could do neither. Women came out slightly ahead, 75% reading and writing against 72% of men. Bear in mind these figures include young children; the census itself only counted people aged nine and over when calculating illiteracy, on the grounds that it was unfair to label a child illiterate before they'd had a chance to learn.

The most common entry on a Caughlin's census form was "Scholar"; 16.7% (9) were children at school. Among the rest, the most common occupations were farmer (13%), general labourer (9.3%), domestic servant (5.6%) and farm labourer (5.6%). Grouped by sector, agriculture accounted for 20.4% of all Caughlins, followed by general labourers, domestic service and food & drink.
