That low figure reflects just how many children there were in Edwardian Ireland, along with high infant mortality and the limits of public health at the time. For comparison, average life expectancy in Ireland today is around 83.
Caves literacy in 1911
Of the Caveses whose literacy was recorded, 86% could both read and write, 3.5% could read but not write, and 10.5% could do neither. Women came out slightly ahead, 87.1% reading and writing against 84.6% of men. Bear in mind these figures include young children; the census itself only counted people aged nine and over when calculating illiteracy, on the grounds that it was unfair to label a child illiterate before they'd had a chance to learn.

The most common male names were George (3), William John, Edward, James and Samuel. For women it was Sarah (4), followed by Mary, Fraces, Margaret and Agnes.
Caves occupations in 1911
The most common entry on a Caves's census form was "Scholar"; 22.8% (13) were children at school. Among the rest, the most common occupations were textile worker (15.8%), farmer (8.8%), shopkeeper / shop assistant / dealer (5.3%) and general labourer (3.5%). Grouped by sector, textiles & clothing accounted for 21.1% of all Caveses, followed by agriculture, retail & commerce and general labourers.
What religion is Caves?
The largest religious group among Caveses was Anglican, at 49.1%. The remainder were mostly Presbyterian (24.6%), Plymouth Brethren (15.8%) and Methodist (10.5%).
