The 1911 Census recorded 1,215 people named Cawley in Ireland, about 0.028% of everyone living in the country at the time and the 678th most common surname overall. The name was split fairly evenly between men and women: 628 men and 586 women. (A small number, 1, had no sex recorded.)

The Cawleys were heavily concentrated in Mayo, home to 50.6% of them (615 people). Next came Sligo (411), Roscommon (48), Tipperary (44) and Galway (28).

The average Cawley in 1911 was 28.8 years old, 28.2 for men and 29.4 for women; a touch younger than the national averages of 29.6 for men and 30.5 for women. That low figure reflects just how many children there were in Edwardian Ireland, along with high infant mortality and the limits of public health at the time. Bear in mind these figures include young children; the census itself only counted people aged nine and over when calculating illiteracy, on the grounds that it was unfair to label a child illiterate before they'd had a chance to learn.

Grouped by sector, agriculture accounted for 24.2% of all Cawleys, followed by general labourers, domestic service and textiles & clothing.
