The 1911 Census recorded 976 people named Chapman in Ireland; roughly one in every 4,500 people carried the name. The name was split fairly evenly between men and women: 468 men and 503 women. (A small number, 5, had no sex recorded.)

Antrim had the largest share of Chapmans, 24.1% (235 people). Next came Down (129), Dublin (128), Wexford (96) and Armagh (41).

The average Chapman in 1911 was 31.8 years old, 31.2 for men and 32.4 for women; slightly older than the national averages of 29.6 for men and 30.5 for women. That low figure reflects just how many children there were in Edwardian Ireland, along with high infant mortality and the limits of public health at the time. For comparison, average life expectancy in Ireland today is around 83.
Chapman literacy in 1911
Of the Chapmans whose literacy was recorded, 86.3% could both read and write, 3.8% could read but not write, and 9.6% could do neither. Men came out slightly ahead, 88.1% reading and writing against 84.7% of women. Bear in mind these figures include young children; the census itself only counted people aged nine and over when calculating illiteracy, on the grounds that it was unfair to label a child illiterate before they'd had a chance to learn.
Chapman common first names
The most common male names were John (43), William, Thomas, James and Joseph. For women it was Mary (46), followed by Margaret, Elizabeth, Jane and Sarah.
Chapman occupations in 1911
The most common entry on a Chapman's census form was "Scholar"; 16.1% (157) were children at school. Among the rest, the most common occupations were farmer (9.1%), shopkeeper / shop assistant / dealer (5%), textile worker (4.9%) and general labourer (4.3%). Grouped by sector, agriculture accounted for 12.9% of all Chapmans, followed by textiles & clothing, retail & commerce and domestic service.
What religion is Chapman?
The largest religious group among Chapmans was Anglican, at 49%. The remainder were mostly Roman Catholic (29.2%), Presbyterian (7.7%), Methodist (5.3%) and Quaker (4.4%).
