That low figure reflects just how many children there were in Edwardian Ireland, along with high infant mortality and the limits of public health at the time. For comparison, average life expectancy in Ireland today is around 83.
Cheevers literacy in 1911
Of the Cheeverses whose literacy was recorded, 76% could both read and write, 4% could read but not write, and 20% could do neither. Women came out slightly ahead, 80.2% reading and writing against 72.3% of men. Bear in mind these figures include young children; the census itself only counted people aged nine and over when calculating illiteracy, on the grounds that it was unfair to label a child illiterate before they'd had a chance to learn.

The most common male names were John (13), Patrick, William, George and James. For women it was Mary (16), followed by Annie, Elizabeth, Bridget and Ellen.

The most common entry on a Cheevers's census form was "Scholar"; 17.8% (41) were children at school. Among the rest, the most common occupations were farmer (13.9%), general labourer (7.4%), farm labourer (5.7%) and textile worker (4.3%). Grouped by sector, agriculture accounted for 19.6% of all Cheeverses, followed by general labourers, textiles & clothing and domestic service.
What religion is Cheevers?
Cheeverses were predominantly Roman Catholic (78.7%). The remainder were mostly Anglican (21.3%).
