The 1911 Census recorded 61 people named Chisholm in Ireland; roughly one in every 72,000 people carried the name. There were noticeably more men than women recorded: 35 men to 26 women.

Antrim had the largest share of Chisholms, 24.6% (15 people). Next came Cork (13), Down (8), Dublin (8) and Kildare (7).

The average Chisholm in 1911 was 33.6 years old, 31.8 for men and 36.2 for women; noticeably older than the national averages of 29.6 for men and 30.5 for women. That low figure reflects just how many children there were in Edwardian Ireland, along with high infant mortality and the limits of public health at the time. For comparison, average life expectancy in Ireland today is around 83.
Chisholm literacy in 1911
Of the Chisholms whose literacy was recorded, 88.3% could both read and write, 1.7% could read but not write, and 10% could do neither. The figures were much the same for men and women. Bear in mind these figures include young children; the census itself only counted people aged nine and over when calculating illiteracy, on the grounds that it was unfair to label a child illiterate before they'd had a chance to learn.

The most common male names were John (6), Thomas, Hugh, James and Robert. For women it was Mary (3), followed by Sarah, Alexandrina, Alice and Anne.
Chisholm occupations in 1911
The most common entry on a Chisholm's census form was "Scholar"; 19.7% (12) were children at school. Among the rest, the most common occupations were metal worker / engineer (9.8%), farmer (6.6%), sailor / dock worker (4.9%) and domestic servant (3.3%). Grouped by sector, metal & engineering accounted for 11.5% of all Chisholms, followed by agriculture, transport and domestic service.
What religion is Chisholm?
Most Chisholms, 54.1%, were Presbyterian. The remainder were mostly Roman Catholic (34.4%) and Anglican (11.5%).
