Of the Clabbys whose literacy was recorded, 74.2% could both read and write, 1.6% could read but not write, and 24.2% could do neither. Men came out slightly ahead, 76.3% reading and writing against 70.8% of women. Bear in mind these figures include young children; the census itself only counted people aged nine and over when calculating illiteracy, on the grounds that it was unfair to label a child illiterate before they'd had a chance to learn.

The most common male names were John (11), Patrick, James, Thomas and Michael; the same five names that topped the list nationally. For women it was Kate (4), followed by Annie, Mary, Cathrine and Maggie.

The most common entry on a Clabby's census form was "Scholar"; 36.8% (25) were children at school. Among the rest, the most common occupations were farmer (16.2%), general labourer (5.9%), farm labourer (4.4%) and tailor (2.9%). Grouped by sector, agriculture accounted for 20.6% of all Clabbys, followed by general labourers, domestic service and textiles & clothing.
