The Clairs were heavily concentrated in Clare, home to 74.6% of them (47 people). Next came Limerick (6), Tipperary (4), Down (2) and Louth (2).

Women came out slightly ahead, 70% reading and writing against 63.6% of men. Bear in mind these figures include young children; the census itself only counted people aged nine and over when calculating illiteracy, on the grounds that it was unfair to label a child illiterate before they'd had a chance to learn.

The most common occupation among Clairs was farmer, 25.4% of them (16 people). Next came scholar / student (23.8%), fisherman (4.8%), general labourer (3.2%) and carter / driver / groom (1.6%). Grouped by sector, agriculture accounted for 27% of all Clairs, followed by fishing, domestic service and general labourers.
What religion is Clair?
Clairs were overwhelmingly Roman Catholic, 96.8% of them. The remainder were mostly Presbyterian (3.2%).
