The 1911 Census recorded 3,028 people named Clifford in Ireland, about 0.069% of everyone living in the country at the time and the 290th most common surname overall. The name was split fairly evenly between men and women: 1,527 men and 1,496 women. (A small number, 5, had no sex recorded.)

Kerry was Clifford country: 46.8% of them (1,418 people) lived there in 1911. Next came Cork (359), Tipperary (195), Limerick (188) and Dublin (165).

The average Clifford in 1911 was 28.0 years old, 28.2 for men and 27.8 for women; a touch younger than the national averages of 29.6 for men and 30.5 for women. That low figure reflects just how many children there were in Edwardian Ireland, along with high infant mortality and the limits of public health at the time. For comparison, average life expectancy in Ireland today is around 83.
Clifford literacy in 1911
Of the Cliffords whose literacy was recorded, 74.2% could both read and write, 4.4% could read but not write, and 21.3% could do neither. The figures were much the same for men and women. Bear in mind these figures include young children; the census itself only counted people aged nine and over when calculating illiteracy, on the grounds that it was unfair to label a child illiterate before they'd had a chance to learn.

The most common male names were John (245), Patrick, Michael, James and Timothy. For women it was Mary (257), followed by Bridget, Ellen, Margaret and Kate.

The most common entry on a Clifford's census form was "Scholar"; 25% (756) were children at school. Among the rest, the most common occupations were farmer (14.6%), general labourer (5.4%), farm labourer (4.5%) and domestic servant (3.4%). Grouped by sector, agriculture accounted for 19.3% of all Cliffords, followed by general labourers, domestic service and textiles & clothing.
What religion is Clifford?
Cliffords were overwhelmingly Roman Catholic, 92.3% of them. The remainder were mostly Anglican (5.1%), Methodist (0.9%), Presbyterian (0.5%) and Unitarian (0.2%).
