Of the Cloghers whose literacy was recorded, 77.2% could both read and write, 7% could read but not write, and 15.8% could do neither. Women came out slightly ahead, 80.8% reading and writing against 74.2% of men. Bear in mind these figures include young children; the census itself only counted people aged nine and over when calculating illiteracy, on the grounds that it was unfair to label a child illiterate before they'd had a chance to learn.

The most common occupation among Cloghers was farmer, 31.1% of them (19 people). Next came scholar / student (27.9%), cook (1.6%), domestic servant (1.6%) and dressmaker / milliner (1.6%). Grouped by sector, agriculture accounted for 32.8% of all Cloghers, followed by domestic service and textiles & clothing.

Cloghers were overwhelmingly Roman Catholic, 98.4% of them. The remainder were mostly Anglican (1.6%).
