The 1911 Census recorded 876 people named Coakley in Ireland; roughly one in every 5,000 people carried the name. The name was split fairly evenly between men and women: 455 men and 421 women.

The Coakleys were heavily concentrated in Cork, home to 77.9% of them (682 people). Next came Kerry (89), Dublin (28), Offaly (20) and Westmeath (15).

Of the Coakleys whose literacy was recorded, 81.8% could both read and write, 1.8% could read but not write, and 16.4% could do neither. Men came out slightly ahead, 83.3% reading and writing against 80.2% of women. Bear in mind these figures include young children; the census itself only counted people aged nine and over when calculating illiteracy, on the grounds that it was unfair to label a child illiterate before they'd had a chance to learn.

The most common male names were John (64), Patrick, Timothy, Daniel and Jeremiah. For women it was Mary (73), followed by Margaret, Ellen, Hannah and Kate.

The most common entry on a Coakley's census form was "Scholar"; 21.7% (190) were children at school. Among the rest, the most common occupations were farmer (19.9%), farm labourer (3.9%), general labourer (3.8%) and retired / pensioner (1.9%). Grouped by sector, agriculture accounted for 24.8% of all Coakleys, followed by general labourers, domestic service and retired & pensioners.
What religion is Coakley?
Coakleys were overwhelmingly Roman Catholic, 98.3% of them. The remainder were mostly Presbyterian (0.7%) and Anglican (0.3%).
