The 1911 Census recorded 500 people named Coates in Ireland; roughly one in every 8,800 people carried the name. The name was split fairly evenly between men and women: 245 men and 251 women. (A small number, 4, had no sex recorded.)

That low figure reflects just how many children there were in Edwardian Ireland, along with high infant mortality and the limits of public health at the time. For comparison, average life expectancy in Ireland today is around 83.

Of the Coateses whose literacy was recorded, 84% could both read and write, 2.1% could read but not write, and 14% could do neither. Women came out slightly ahead, 85.2% reading and writing against 82.6% of men. Bear in mind these figures include young children; the census itself only counted people aged nine and over when calculating illiteracy, on the grounds that it was unfair to label a child illiterate before they'd had a chance to learn.

The most common male names were John (22), William, Thomas, Samuel and David. For women it was Mary (24), followed by Margaret, Elizabeth, Sarah and Annie.

The most common entry on a Coates's census form was "Scholar"; 20% (100) were children at school. Among the rest, the most common occupations were textile worker (6.2%), general labourer (4.2%), farmer (3.6%) and metal worker / engineer (3.4%). Grouped by sector, textiles & clothing accounted for 9.2% of all Coateses, followed by agriculture, general labourers and professional.
What religion is Coates?
Most Coateses, 59%, were Anglican. The remainder were mostly Roman Catholic (25.8%), Presbyterian (10.6%), Methodist (1%) and Protestant (0.6%).
