The 1911 Census recorded 767 people named Coen in Ireland; roughly one in every 5,700 people carried the name. The name was split fairly evenly between men and women: 416 men and 351 women.

The Coens were heavily concentrated in Galway, home to 51.5% of them (395 people). Next came Mayo (127), Sligo (91), Roscommon (85) and Dublin (17).

The average Coen in 1911 was 30.9 years old, 30.5 for men and 31.3 for women; almost exactly in line with the national averages of 29.6 for men and 30.5 for women. That low figure reflects just how many children there were in Edwardian Ireland, along with high infant mortality and the limits of public health at the time. For comparison, average life expectancy in Ireland today is around 83.

Of the Coens whose literacy was recorded, 73.9% could both read and write, 4.4% could read but not write, and 21.8% could do neither. Men came out slightly ahead, 78.6% reading and writing against 68.3% of women. Bear in mind these figures include young children; the census itself only counted people aged nine and over when calculating illiteracy, on the grounds that it was unfair to label a child illiterate before they'd had a chance to learn.

The most common male names were Michael (60), John, Patrick, Thomas and Martin. For women it was Mary (64), followed by Bridget, Ellen, Margaret and Kate.

The most common occupation among Coens was farmer, 26.7% of them (205 people). Next came scholar / student (20.3%), farm labourer (4.8%), general labourer (2.9%) and shopkeeper / shop assistant / dealer (1.6%). Grouped by sector, agriculture accounted for 32.6% of all Coens, followed by general labourers, retail & commerce and domestic service.
What religion is Coen?
Coens were overwhelmingly Roman Catholic, 98.4% of them. The remainder were mostly Anglican (0.1%).
