The 1911 Census recorded 312 people named Colfer in Ireland; roughly one in every 14,000 people carried the name. The name was split fairly evenly between men and women: 162 men and 150 women.

The Colfers were heavily concentrated in Wexford, home to 71.2% of them (222 people). Next came Waterford (53), Kilkenny (16), Carlow (12) and Dublin (9).

Of the Colfers whose literacy was recorded, 76.5% could both read and write, 3.9% could read but not write, and 19.6% could do neither. Men came out slightly ahead, 78.3% reading and writing against 74.7% of women. Bear in mind these figures include young children; the census itself only counted people aged nine and over when calculating illiteracy, on the grounds that it was unfair to label a child illiterate before they'd had a chance to learn.

The most common male names were Patrick (26), John, James, Thomas and William. For women it was Mary (27), followed by Catherine, Margaret, Bridget and Ellen.

The most common entry on a Colfer's census form was "Scholar"; 20.5% (64) were children at school. Among the rest, the most common occupations were farmer (19.6%), domestic servant (4.2%), farm labourer (3.8%) and general labourer (3.2%). Grouped by sector, agriculture accounted for 24.4% of all Colfers, followed by domestic service, general labourers and retail & commerce.
