The 1911 Census recorded 1,074 people named Coll in Ireland, about 0.025% of everyone living in the country at the time and the 741st most common surname overall. The name was split fairly evenly between men and women: 549 men and 525 women.

The Colls were heavily concentrated in Donegal, home to 71.9% of them (772 people). Next came Roscommon (90), Tyrone (69), Limerick (49) and Derry (38).

The average Coll in 1911 was 30.2 years old, 28.8 for men and 31.7 for women; almost exactly in line with the national averages of 29.6 for men and 30.5 for women. That low figure reflects just how many children there were in Edwardian Ireland, along with high infant mortality and the limits of public health at the time. For comparison, average life expectancy in Ireland today is around 83.
Coll literacy in 1911
Of the Colls whose literacy was recorded, 62.7% could both read and write, 4.6% could read but not write, and 32.8% could do neither. The figures were much the same for men and women. Bear in mind these figures include young children; the census itself only counted people aged nine and over when calculating illiteracy, on the grounds that it was unfair to label a child illiterate before they'd had a chance to learn.

The most common male names were Patrick (64), John, James, Hugh and Thomas. For women it was Mary (85), followed by Bridget, Annie, Maggie and Grace.

The most common entry on a Coll's census form was "Scholar"; 21.8% (234) were children at school. Among the rest, the most common occupations were farmer (20%), farm labourer (6.1%), domestic servant (3.5%) and general labourer (3.3%). Grouped by sector, agriculture accounted for 26.4% of all Colls, followed by domestic service, general labourers and retail & commerce.
What religion is Coll?
Colls were overwhelmingly Roman Catholic, 98% of them. The remainder were mostly Anglican (1.5%), Baptist (0.3%) and Presbyterian (0.2%).
