Of the Condras whose literacy was recorded, 87% could both read and write, 4.3% could read but not write, and 8.7% could do neither. Bear in mind these figures include young children; the census itself only counted people aged nine and over when calculating illiteracy, on the grounds that it was unfair to label a child illiterate before they'd had a chance to learn.

Among the rest, the most common occupations were farmer (9.8%), general labourer (5.9%), dressmaker / milliner (3.9%) and housekeeper (2%). Grouped by sector, agriculture accounted for 9.8% of all Condras, followed by general labourers, textiles & clothing and domestic service.
