Coogan in 1911 Ireland
The 1911 Census recorded 938 people named Coogan in Ireland; roughly one in every 4,700 people carried the name. The name was split fairly evenly between men and women: 490 men and 445 women. (A small number, 3, had no sex recorded.)
Counties with Coogan in Ireland
Dublin had the largest share of Coogans, 20.8% (195 people). Next came Kilkenny (152), Monaghan (107), Meath (86) and Wicklow (72).
Coogan average age in 1911
The average Coogan in 1911 was 28.0 years old, 28.1 for men and 27.9 for women; a touch younger than the national averages of 29.6 for men and 30.5 for women. That low figure reflects just how many children there were in Edwardian Ireland, along with high infant mortality and the limits of public health at the time. For comparison, average life expectancy in Ireland today is around 83.
Coogan literacy in 1911
Of the Coogans whose literacy was recorded, 79.1% could both read and write, 4.6% could read but not write, and 16.3% could do neither. Men came out slightly ahead, 80.7% reading and writing against 77.2% of women. Bear in mind these figures include young children; the census itself only counted people aged nine and over when calculating illiteracy, on the grounds that it was unfair to label a child illiterate before they'd had a chance to learn.
Coogan common first names
The most common male names were James (66), John, Patrick, Michael and Thomas; the same five names that topped the list nationally. For women it was Mary (69), followed by Bridget, Margaret, Annie and Catherine.
Coogan occupations in 1911
The most common entry on a Coogan's census form was "Scholar"; 19.9% (187) were children at school. Among the rest, the most common occupations were farmer (10.8%), general labourer (5.8%), farm labourer (3.9%) and shopkeeper / shop assistant / dealer (3%). Grouped by sector, agriculture accounted for 16.1% of all Coogans, followed by general labourers, domestic service and retail & commerce.
What religion is Coogan?
Coogans were overwhelmingly Roman Catholic, 98.9% of them. The remainder were mostly Anglican (0.4%).
