The 1911 Census recorded 357 people named Cook in Ireland; roughly one in every 12,000 people carried the name. The name was split fairly evenly between men and women: 186 men and 169 women. (A small number, 2, had no sex recorded.)

Dublin was Cook country: 29.1% of them (104 people) lived there in 1911. Next came Antrim (45), Down (39), Tyrone (27) and Cork (20).

The average Cook in 1911 was 26.6 years old, 25.6 for men and 27.8 for women; noticeably younger than the national averages of 29.6 for men and 30.5 for women. That low figure reflects just how many children there were in Edwardian Ireland, along with high infant mortality and the limits of public health at the time. For comparison, average life expectancy in Ireland today is around 83.
Cook literacy in 1911
Of the Cooks whose literacy was recorded, 79.5% could both read and write, 2.1% could read but not write, and 18.4% could do neither. Women came out slightly ahead, 81.4% reading and writing against 77.6% of men. Bear in mind these figures include young children; the census itself only counted people aged nine and over when calculating illiteracy, on the grounds that it was unfair to label a child illiterate before they'd had a chance to learn.

The most common male names were William (15), James, Robert, John and Charles. For women it was Mary (20), followed by Elizabeth, Jane, Margaret and Annie.

The most common entry on a Cook's census form was "Scholar"; 16% (57) were children at school. Among the rest, the most common occupations were farm labourer (3.6%), farmer (3.6%), general labourer (3.6%) and textile worker (3.6%). Grouped by sector, agriculture accounted for 8.1% of all Cooks, followed by domestic service, textiles & clothing and retail & commerce.
What religion is Cook?
The largest religious group among Cooks was Anglican, at 49%. The remainder were mostly Roman Catholic (32.2%), Presbyterian (11.8%), Methodist (3.9%) and Unitarian (1.1%).
