The Coughlans were heavily concentrated in Cork, home to 54.5% of them (1,659 people). Next came Dublin (252), Offaly (242), Waterford (151) and Limerick (140).

The most common male names were John (251), Patrick, James, Michael and Thomas; the same five names that topped the list nationally. For women it was Mary (255), followed by Margaret, Ellen, Bridget and Kate.

Among the rest, the most common occupations were farmer (12.6%), farm labourer (5.5%), general labourer (5.2%) and domestic servant (3.8%). Grouped by sector, agriculture accounted for 18.8% of all Coughlans, followed by domestic service, general labourers and retail & commerce.
