The Cournanes were heavily concentrated in Kerry, home to 95% of them (211 people). Next came Cork (8), Limerick (2) and Waterford (1).

The average Cournane in 1911 was 27.9 years old, 24.8 for men and 32.0 for women; a touch younger than the national averages of 29.6 for men and 30.5 for women. That low figure reflects just how many children there were in Edwardian Ireland, along with high infant mortality and the limits of public health at the time. For comparison, average life expectancy in Ireland today is around 83.

Of the Cournanes whose literacy was recorded, 73.9% could both read and write, 0.9% could read but not write, and 25.2% could do neither. Men came out slightly ahead, 74.8% reading and writing against 72.6% of women. Bear in mind these figures include young children; the census itself only counted people aged nine and over when calculating illiteracy, on the grounds that it was unfair to label a child illiterate before they'd had a chance to learn.

The most common entry on a Cournane's census form was "Scholar"; 28.8% (64) were children at school. Among the rest, the most common occupations were farmer (20.3%), farm labourer (7.2%), domestic servant (3.6%) and carter / driver / groom (1.4%). Grouped by sector, agriculture accounted for 27.5% of all Cournanes, followed by domestic service, textiles & clothing and transport.
