The 1911 Census recorded 4,129 people named Craig in Ireland, about 0.094% of everyone living in the country at the time and the 205th most common surname overall. The name was split fairly evenly between men and women: 1,983 men and 2,139 women. (A small number, 7, had no sex recorded.)

Antrim was Craig country: 40.4% of them (1,670 people) lived there in 1911. Next came Down (819), Derry (464), Donegal (211) and Dublin (195).

The average Craig in 1911 was 29.1 years old, 28.3 for men and 29.9 for women; almost exactly in line with the national averages of 29.6 for men and 30.5 for women. That low figure reflects just how many children there were in Edwardian Ireland, along with high infant mortality and the limits of public health at the time. For comparison, average life expectancy in Ireland today is around 83.

Of the Craigs whose literacy was recorded, 80.6% could both read and write, 3.8% could read but not write, and 15.6% could do neither. The figures were much the same for men and women. Bear in mind these figures include young children; the census itself only counted people aged nine and over when calculating illiteracy, on the grounds that it was unfair to label a child illiterate before they'd had a chance to learn.

The most common male names were John (227), James, William, Robert and Thomas. For women it was Mary (168), followed by Elizabeth, Margaret, Sarah and Jane.

The most common entry on a Craig's census form was "Scholar"; 19.8% (816) were children at school. Among the rest, the most common occupations were farmer (9.8%), textile worker (5.7%), general labourer (4.1%) and farm labourer (2.5%). Grouped by sector, agriculture accounted for 12.6% of all Craigs, followed by textiles & clothing, general labourers and retail & commerce.
What religion is Craig?
The largest religious group among Craigs was Presbyterian, at 48.5%. The remainder were mostly Anglican (27.2%), Roman Catholic (14.7%), Methodist (3.8%) and Unitarian (1%).
